▼Event summary

The head temple, Koboji, is a Shingon Buddhist temple located in Mita, Minato Ward, Tokyo.

Its founding dates back to 816. It was built as a training center for Shomyo (chanting) when Kobo Daishi Kukai founded Mount Koya in Wakayama. In the mid-Meiji period, it was moved to its current location in Mita, Tokyo by Watanabe Teijonni, and in 2014 it underwent extensive renovations to take on its current form, with the addition of a columbarium called "Karou Tokyo."

It is also known as the 13th temple of the 88 sacred places within the capital, and is visited by many devotees.

In the main hall of Kobo-ji Temple, Dainichi Nyorai is the principal image, with Acala on the left and a statue of Kobo Daishi, the founder of Shingon Buddhism, on the right. Of particular note is the "Eternal Flame" that Kukai lit 1,200 years ago, which was given to the temple by its legally related Daisho-in Temple in Miyajima in 2021 and is carefully enshrined in the main hall. This "Eternal Flame" is revered by many as a symbol of peace and tranquility.
